Co-hosts Mexico concluded their group stage campaign with a perfect winning record, shutting out the Czech Republic in their final match.
Having already secured their spot as group winners, manager Javier Aguirre opted to field a rotated squad, giving opportunities to several players. Among them, left-back Mateo Chavez marked his first international goal with a composed finish shortly after halftime. The match also saw a standout performance from teenage midfielder Gilberto Mora, who supplied the assist for Mexico’s second goal scored by Julian Quinones.
Mora, at just 17 years and 253 days old, became the youngest player to ever start a World Cup match for Mexico and the sixth-youngest in history. His energetic play earned him a standing ovation upon his substitution. His replacement, Alvaro Fidalgo, sealed the victory with a powerful strike into the top corner.
A notable moment for the home crowd was the late substitution of veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who received a roaring reception. At 40 years old, Ochoa is participating in his sixth World Cup, a feat matched by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, though he has only featured in four of those tournaments.
Mexico now advances to the knockout stages, scheduled to play their next match in Mexico City on Wednesday, July 1. The Czech Republic, meanwhile, exits the tournament after finishing at the bottom of Group A with a single point.
