Mbarara Residents Fund Reconstruction of Vital Footbridge After Government Inaction

Frustrated by years of unfulfilled government promises, residents of Mbarara City have pooled over Shs 9.6 million to rebuild the Kanyeite footbridge across the River Rwizi, which was washed away in 2022. The bridge is a crucial link for thousands of people and has been the site of several drownings. Residents of Karugangama Cell in Mbarara City have taken matters into their own hands to restore the Kanyeite footbridge, which was destroyed by floods in 2022. For over three years, the community has been appealing to government authorities for assistance, but their pleas have gone unanswered. This inaction has forced them to raise at least Shs 9.6 million through self-mobilisation.

The Kanyeite footbridge is a vital artery connecting Karugangama to essential locations like Bishop Stuart University and various city wards. It also serves as the quickest route to Masha sub-county, making it indispensable for traders, students, and daily commuters. The lack of a reliable crossing has not only disrupted economic activities but also posed severe safety risks, with at least seven reported drownings in recent years while attempting to use makeshift crossings.

Wilson Kafureeka, chairperson of the Karugangama Residents Development Association, stated that despite approaching city officials, no government intervention materialised. The community, now aiming to raise the full Shs 140 million needed for a new bridge, has secured approved engineering designs for a 24-metre steel bridge capable of handling light traffic and lasting at least 25 years.

Mbarara City speaker Bonny Tashobya Karusya lauded the residents’ proactive approach, particularly their success in obtaining the necessary engineering plans with city support. Mbarara City town clerk Justine Barekye confirmed the city’s awareness and has written to the Ministry of Works and Transport seeking support for the community-led initiative.
