Kalangala By-Election Results Rejected by NUP as NRM Candidate Declared Winner

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, Aidah Nabayigga, has officially won the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election, securing a significant victory over her closest rival, Iren Nampala of the National Unity Platform (NUP). Nabayigga garnered 12,642 votes, surpassing Nampala’s 7,474 votes.

This by-election was necessitated by the passing of the former MP, Helen Nakimuli. Other candidates in the race included Sharifah Kaala, Hellen Flavia Nagawa, and Nassuuna Agnes, who received substantially fewer votes.

Despite the official declaration by Kalangala District Returning Officer Ronald Agaba, NUP leaders have vocally rejected the outcome. They claim that their candidate, Iren Nampala, actually won and allege that the electoral process was marred by irregularities. NUP has vowed to challenge the results and indicate they will announce their next course of action soon.

Supporters of the NRM celebrated the victory, with Nabayigga expressing gratitude for the voters’ trust and pledging to continue her service. NRM leaders, including Rose Sseninde, hailed the result as a sign of public confidence in the ruling party and anticipation of continued development programs in the district.

However, the NUP’s rejection of the results suggests a potential political and legal battle ahead as the party plans its challenge. The electoral commission has yet to respond to the specific allegations made by the opposition. This situation highlights ongoing tensions and contestations within Uganda’s political landscape.
