Peace Kabasweka, a rising star in Ugandan golf, will now set her sights on the Zambia Ladies Open after an unexpected turn of events. Her initial plan to compete in the prestigious 112th Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship in Toronto was regrettably canceled due to a 90-day travel and immigration suspension imposed on Uganda following concerns over the Ebola virus.
Disappointed but undeterred, Kabasweka has pivoted her focus to the 54-hole Zambia Ladies Golf Open, which commenced on Friday at the Lusaka Golf Club. This event features strong competition from players across Kenya and Tanzania, offering Kabasweka a valuable opportunity to transition from practice to competitive play. “It’s a great competition… it will help me refocus from practice mode to a structured scoring competition,” she stated.
This marks Kabasweka’s second appearance at the Zambian tournament, having secured a second-place finish in 2024. Her primary objective this year is victory. “My target is to emerge victorious. I have done good practice especially on my short game which has been letting me down,” Kabasweka shared.
Currently ranked 323rd in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), Kabasweka aspires to break into the top 100, and a win in Zambia could significantly boost her standing. This trip also serves as preparation for her defense of the Uganda Ladies Golf Open title in August.
Kabasweka, who has also achieved top-10 finishes in South Africa and Kenya this year, expressed gratitude to the “Team Kabalaza of Entebbe Club” for their sponsorship, promising to represent Uganda with pride. The Zambia Ladies Open is scheduled to run from June 26-28.
