Tragedy struck Koboko Municipality on Thursday evening when a 13-year-old pupil, Buruga Hassan of Nuru Islamic Primary School, was fatally shot. Another student, Hamid Hazim, 16, sustained a leg injury during the incident.
The chaos reportedly began after students from an athletic competition caused disruptions, blocking the Koboko-Oraba road. Police were alerted to the situation and responded with a patrol team comprising three police officers and five Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) soldiers.
Upon arrival, the group of students allegedly began pelting the officers with stones, damaging the police patrol vehicle. In an attempt to disperse the crowd, the officers reportedly fired live bullets into the air. Tragically, stray bullets hit the two pupils.
The West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, SSP Josephine Anguchia, confirmed that a murder investigation is underway. Forensic teams have collected evidence from the scene, including firearms, ammunition, and clothing belonging to the deceased.
Four police officers involved in the incident have been arrested and detained. Authorities are actively working to identify the five UPDF officers who were part of the response team and are wanted for questioning and potential charges. The investigation aims to determine the precise circumstances leading to the fatal shooting and will involve documenting the crime scene and gathering further forensic exhibits.
