President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, the State Minister for Higher Education, to serve as the Acting Minister of Education and Sports. This decision, effective immediately, aims to maintain the smooth functioning of the ministry during the absence of the substantive minister.
Janet Museveni, who was recently re-appointed to the Education and Sports docket, has not yet assumed her new term in office. Her temporary absence from public duties follows a recent disclosure by President Museveni regarding her health challenges. The President revealed that Mrs. Museveni has been recovering from a severe health crisis that began on March 21, 2026.
President Museveni expressed profound gratitude for his wife’s recovery, noting that divine intervention and the efforts of skilled medical professionals were instrumental in her survival. He also alluded to a symbolic significance in her health battle, mentioning that the adverse events occurred on a date historically linked to a significant national victory.
Mrs. Museveni’s temporary withdrawal from active service marks a pause in a long and distinguished career in public life. Prior to her extensive tenure at the Ministry of Education and Sports, she served as the Member of Parliament for Ruhaama County and as the Minister for Karamoja Affairs. Her enduring legacy also includes her foundational role in establishing the Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO).
The President concluded by expressing his hopes for their continued well-being, jointly praying for longevity and the realization of the East African Federation. This transition underscored the commitment to uninterrupted service delivery within the vital education sector.
