Buffaloes RFC’s transformation from a mid-table team to a championship contender showcases a significant shift in their playing philosophy. Last year, they faltered in the quarterfinals, but this season they have rebuilt into a side characterized by control, speed, and a clear strategy for closing out matches.
Coach Charles Onen identified a critical weakness: “We always fall short after a very impressive performance that does not give us a good finishing.” This diagnosis led to a rebuild that has dramatically improved their output and control. The team’s try-scoring has surged from 18 in 2024 to 55 in 2026, indicating a far more potent attacking force. Defensively, they’ve become notably tighter, conceding a mere 24 tries in 15 matches, a substantial improvement from previous seasons.
The integration of players developed in the Sevens circuit has injected a new level of pace into Buffaloes’ game. This has resulted in quicker carries, faster support lines, and more instinctive playmaking in broken sequences. New attacking talents like Daniel Otim and FatMoses Watmon have emerged, contributing over 30% of the team’s tries this season.
While structure is vital, control in crucial moments often defines knockout rugby. This is where Yasin Waiswa, with 104 points this season, becomes indispensable. He manages territory through his kicking, stabilizes play when momentum falters, and converts pressure into scores. Waiswa, who experienced a final-minute penalty miss in last year’s final with Jinja Hippos, brings invaluable experience.
His leadership was evident in the semifinal against Makerere Graveyard. Trailing 8-6 at halftime, Waiswa took charge in the second half, scoring 15 points through penalties, a conversion, and a try to secure a 20-8 victory. This performance underscores Buffaloes’ newfound ability to perform under pressure, a stark contrast to previous seasons.
Buffaloes will now face Stanbic Black Pirates in the Uganda Rugby Premiership final at Kings Park Arena.
