The Uganda Secondary School Sports Association (USSSA) has rolled out its official electoral guidelines, setting the stage for leadership transitions across its three-tier structure. These guidelines, effective for the 2026-2030 period, will govern elections and by-elections at the district/city, zonal, and national levels.
Elections will commence at the district level on July 20. Voting rights are restricted to schools that have actively participated in USSSA activities and maintained registration on the online system for the past two years. USSSA oversees 167 districts, with each district leadership comprising 10 executive members. Each recognized school will send two delegates – typically the headteacher and the games teacher, or their designated representatives – to cast votes for these positions.
The electoral process then progresses to the zonal level on July 25, where five representatives chosen by each district executive will participate. USSSA comprises 19 zones, each with 10 leadership slots. Subsequently, five delegates from each zone will proceed to the national assembly on August 1, where the national president and nine other top executive members will be elected.
Eligibility criteria emphasize that candidates must be recognized professional teachers within Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES)-recognized secondary schools located in the area they intend to represent. Specific requirements, including a minimum of a degree in education and teaching experience, are stipulated for aspiring chairpersons and treasurers at district and zonal levels, with provisions for affirmative action to include private school educators. National leadership candidates face similar prerequisites, including prior experience in elective positions or committee roles within USSSA or related associations.
The USSSA Electoral Commission, led by Chairman Joseph Opio Okodeu, has been tasked with overseeing the entire process with diligence and integrity. The commission members, recognized for their extensive experience in education and sports administration, are committed to ensuring a fair and transparent election cycle.
