The upcoming Future Stars–SAU National Schools Scrabble Championship, scheduled for Saturday at Gayaza Junior School, marks a significant moment for Ugandan youth scrabble. This inaugural event aims to identify and nurture the nation’s top young scrabble talent, offering them a crucial platform to qualify for the World Youth Scrabble Championship taking place in Nairobi, Kenya, this August.

Organized through a collaboration between the Future Stars Sports Programme and the Scrabble Association of Uganda (SAU), the championship is designed to foster the sport’s growth at the school level. SAU technical vice president, Godwin Murungi, highlighted the event’s timely arrival, stating it aligns perfectly with the ongoing efforts to develop scrabble within the country. The competition will test participants not only on their vocabulary but also on their strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Anticipation is high, with more than 200 players from primary and secondary schools nationwide expected to participate. Several prominent schools, including Kiira College Butiki, Bishop’s Secondary School, and Standard High School, have already confirmed their attendance. Gayaza Junior School’s head of sports, Daniel Kasawuli, assured attendees of the meticulous arrangements, including necessary facilities, equipment, and logistical support, to ensure a seamless competition.

In addition to focusing on athletic performance, organizers are prioritizing health and safety. Strict adherence to Ebola prevention guidelines, as mandated by the Ministry of Health, will be enforced throughout the event. The championship serves as the foundational step for Uganda’s young wordsmiths as they strive to represent their nation on the global stage.

This championship is more than just a competition; it’s a gateway for Uganda’s brightest young scrabble minds to test their skills against international peers, aiming for slots in the prestigious World Youth Scrabble Championship. The event is set to take place on Saturday, June 27, at Gayaza Junior School.
