Parliament Speaker Jacob Oboth-Oboth has officially welcomed the new leadership of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), stressing the importance of unity, discipline, and robust accountability measures. The call came as Tingey County MP Fadil Twalla assumed office as the PLU’s new Secretary General, taking over from David Kabanda.
During the handover ceremony in Kampala, Speaker Oboth-Oboth commended Kabanda for establishing a solid foundation for the organisation since its inception. He underscored that leadership transitions are a natural and healthy part of institutional growth, reflecting the dynamics of public service.
Oboth-Oboth, drawing from his own political journey, highlighted how the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government has provided opportunities for individuals from various backgrounds to rise within the political system, citing his own ascent to Speaker as an example. He emphasized that changes in leadership should be viewed as normal governance processes rather than disruptions.
Addressing Twalla directly, the Speaker cautioned that the Secretary General role is not merely ceremonial but a significant commission requiring dedication and a drive for transformation. He stated, “You are not inheriting a title, you are inheriting a trust. This is not an office, it is a commission.”
As a pressure group aligned with the NRM, Oboth-Oboth stressed that PLU must actively support government development agendas and contribute to national transformation. He warned against internal divisions, asserting that cohesion is vital for the organization’s survival and that “unity is not a slogan, it is a weapon.”
Furthermore, the Speaker dedicated a significant portion of his address to the pervasive issue of corruption in Uganda, identifying it as a major governance challenge. He urged PLU members to steer clear of any involvement in corrupt practices such as land grabbing, embezzlement, or abuse of office, emphasizing responsible use of government opportunities.
He also advocated for inclusivity within PLU, encouraging it to be open to all Ugandans. The ceremony also featured remarks from PLU Vice Chairperson Michael Nuwagira Kaguta, who echoed calls for unity and forgiveness, acknowledging early organizational challenges.
In closing, Oboth-Oboth urged Twalla and his team to focus on delivering results, fostering collaboration with state institutions, and ensuring discipline at all levels, particularly at the grassroots where the PLU’s impact should be most visible.
