Security operatives forcefully entered the home of former Minister for Ethics and Integrity, Miria Matembe, on Wednesday, carrying out an extensive search that lasted several hours. The operatives reportedly seized multiple electronic gadgets before departing. Ms. Matembe, a well-known veteran politician and a strong critic of the current government, confirmed the incident, stating that she was away from home when the search took place.
According to Ms. Matembe’s account, security forces arrived at her home around 10:00 AM. Her caretakers informed her that the operatives gained entry by force and thoroughly searched the premises. She expressed uncertainty about the exact motive behind the search or the items the operatives were looking for, even raising concerns about whether her abduction was a possibility.
At the time of this report, the specific reasons for the raid were not disclosed, and official comments from police spokespersons were not immediately available. It is also unclear if Ms. Matembe had any prior indication that her home would be targeted.
This event occurs in a context of increasing concerns over human rights in Uganda. Ms. Matembe, an advocate for women’s rights and a co-founder of the Center for Domestic Violence Prevention, has been increasingly outspoken against alleged state-sponsored abductions, arbitrary arrests, and enforced disappearances, particularly those affecting opposition figures and activists.
Ms. Matembe, who was once an ally of President Yoweri Museveni and played a role in drafting the 1995 Constitution, distanced herself from the ruling establishment in 2003 due to her opposition to the removal of presidential term limits. Since then, she has consistently championed constitutionalism and advocated for greater civic space.
