President Yoweri Museveni has revealed that First Lady Janet Museveni recently faced a life-threatening illness earlier this year. In a public birthday message shared on his X account on June 24, 2026, Museveni described the First Lady’s health struggle, which began on March 21, 2026.

He stated, “Sitaane, three months ago, on the 21st of March, 2026, launched an attack on the life of Maama. However, Sitaane miscalculated.” Museveni credited divine intervention and skilled doctors for her survival and subsequent strong recovery, noting the date’s significance. “The 21st of March is a good day for the Resistance,” he recalled, referencing a 1979 battle against Idi Amin’s forces.

The President also took the opportunity to honor his wife’s sacrifices during the bush war (1981-1986), when she managed their children while in exile. He further lauded her extensive public service, highlighting her work with the Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO), her political involvement in Ntungamo District, and her faith-based initiatives.

Concluding his message, Museveni expressed a personal prayer for their continued good health, hoping they both reach 100 years, and reiterated his long-held vision for a united East African Federation, seeing it as crucial for regional stability and development.

This revelation comes amidst speculation surrounding Ms. Museveni’s reappointment to the Education and Sports ministry, as she did not undergo the usual parliamentary vetting. The President did not specify the location of her treatment.
