Luzira residents were alarmed on Wednesday when security operatives, a mix of uniformed soldiers and plain-clothed individuals, raided the home of prominent activist and former Ethics and Integrity Minister, Miria Matembe. The incident left her husband, Nehemiah Matembe, deeply shaken.
According to Nehemiah, the operatives arrived in a vehicle commonly known as a “drone.” They forced their way into the home, proceeding to conduct an extensive search that included the couple’s bedroom. Nehemiah reported that he tried to question the intruders about their identities and intentions, but his pleas were met with silence.
“I asked who they were and what they wanted, but they ignored me, searched the bedroom and bathroom, then returned. I continued asking questions, but they never responded,” stated a distressed Nehemiah. The search, which lasted about 30 minutes, yielded nothing, and the operatives left without explanation.
Nehemiah Matembe believes the operation was an attempt to abduct his wife, who was fortunately away at the time, having gone to the gym. Her phone has since been unreachable.
Matembe has been a vocal critic of the military’s alleged involvement in political matters and has spoken out against what she perceives as the misuse of power by figures like Muhoozi Kainerugaba. She has also criticized the First Family for not curbing what she terms as Muhoozi’s “new Amin” tendencies.
This raid has raised significant concerns about the safety of activists and critics in Uganda. Matembe, a respected figure known for her role in drafting the 1995 Constitution and her advocacy for women’s rights, has consistently condemned human rights abuses and enforced disappearances.
Her public opposition to the removal of presidential term limits in 2003 marked a turning point in her relationship with the ruling NRM party, solidifying her position as a prominent government critic.
