Men in Uganda Grapple with Silent Mental Health Crisis Amidst Economic Hardship

A growing number of men in Uganda are experiencing severe anxiety and depression, often exacerbated by the rising cost of living and the pressure to be sole providers for their families. This silent struggle is frequently compounded by deeply ingrained societal norms that discourage men from expressing vulnerability or seeking help.
One taxi driver, who wished to remain anonymous, described his grueling schedule. Waking at 3 am for long, arduous trips, he earns Shs60,000 daily from which he must cover all personal expenses and ensure his family is fed. The constant pressure from passengers and vehicle owners, coupled with late-night returns and marital misunderstandings due to his work schedule, leaves him exhausted and emotionally drained.
Psychiatrists and mental health advocates highlight that societal expectations place an immense burden on men. They are often expected to be strong, decisive, and financially stable, leading many to internalize stress, debt, and personal struggles. This “culture of silence” contributes to a hidden mental health crisis, with some men resorting to alcohol or drugs as coping mechanisms, while others become withdrawn or irritable.
The State of Uganda Population Report 2025 indicates a significant prevalence of mental health conditions across the population, yet fewer than ten percent of those needing care receive adequate support. Experts emphasize the urgent need for supportive environments within families, workplaces, and communities where men feel safe to discuss their mental well-being without fear of stigma.
Raising awareness during Men’s Mental Health Month in June aims to break down these barriers. Early intervention and encouraging open conversations are crucial steps towards helping men overcome emotional distress and lead healthier lives. The ongoing economic challenges, alongside traditional roles, are pushing many men to their emotional limits, underscoring the critical need for accessible mental health support.
