The Ministry of Works and Transport has commenced a significant infrastructure project in Masaka District, focusing on the tarmacking of key feeder roads. This initiative aims to enhance transportation networks and foster socioeconomic development across the region.

The initial phase involves upgrading the five-kilometer Bukunda–Kamuzinda road in Kyanamukaaka Sub-county. Local residents have expressed enthusiasm for the project, anticipating that it will streamline commutes, boost trade, and improve access to essential services like healthcare and education.

While the road improvements are a welcome development, community members are also calling on the government to address persistent challenges, including inadequate access to clean water, reliable electricity, and better healthcare facilities. Leaders point out that Masaka, having been divided to form numerous new districts, has lagged in development despite its central role.

Historically, the poor condition of feeder roads has hampered the transportation of agricultural produce, such as coffee, and other goods to market, particularly during the rainy seasons. This upgrading is expected to alleviate these long-standing difficulties.

Future plans, according to engineers from the Ministry of Works and Transport, include extending tarmac to the Kanoni–Bulegeya–Kamuzinda and Kamuzinda–Kyanamukaaka Roundabout roads after thorough assessments. Residents have also requested the installation of streetlights along the new roads to enhance security and safety for both pedestrians and motorists at night.

Local officials are urging cooperation from residents, emphasizing the importance of respecting road reserves to ensure the smooth progression of the projects. They also advised against encroachment, as compensation may not be provided for illegally occupied land.

Representatives of former Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi’s office have assured the community of the government’s commitment to continued infrastructure development and addressing other critical needs in Masaka District. Residents are optimistic that improved roads will attract investment and contribute to the district’s overall economic growth.
