Prosecutors in Kenya have announced their intention to bring murder charges against several students in connection with a devastating dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls’ School that resulted in the deaths of sixteen young learners.

The incident, which occurred on May 28th, saw a blaze engulf a dormitory housing over 200 students, leading to the tragic loss of life and numerous injuries. It is alleged that the fire began when mattresses were set alight near an exit, trapping many students who were forced to escape through a single, functioning doorway as the emergency exit was jammed.

Following an investigation, which included interviews and a review of CCTV footage, eight students were identified as persons of interest. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has now confirmed that sufficient evidence exists to proceed with charges.

The DPP’s office stated that the implicated students would face sixteen counts of murder, corresponding to the number of pupils who perished. The exact number of suspects to be charged and the specific court date remain unconfirmed, though an appearance in Naivasha court is anticipated.

This tragedy highlights a persistent issue of school fires in Kenya, with arson often cited as a cause, frequently linked to student grievances over disciplinary actions or living conditions. Preliminary findings also indicated safety lapses at the school, such as overcrowding and blocked exits, contributing to the high casualty count.

The DPP has voiced significant concern over the increasing frequency of arson and related crimes in educational institutions, vowing to hold those responsible accountable.
