Authorities in Wakiso District have made substantial progress in a recent school break-in case, arresting five suspects in connection with the theft of valuable computer equipment from Buwambo Seed Secondary School. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of June 18, saw unknown perpetrators breach the school’s perimeter fence and make off with vital IT resources.
Investigators believe the thieves gained access to the school’s computer laboratory around 2 a.m., making off with four HP server central processing units (CPUs). The estimated financial loss from this specific theft is around Shs60 million.
Detectives from the Matuga Police Station initiated inquiries immediately after the incident. Their investigation involved tracing the suspects’ movements, which led to the recovery of a motorcycle suspected to have been used in the commission of the crime. The initial arrest of two suspects proved crucial, as their interrogation provided leads to locations in Kampala where some of the stolen school property had reportedly been sold.
In a targeted operation on June 23, police raided premises along Kampala Road, leading to the recovery of 15 computer CPUs, nine Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) units, and 11 HP monitors. Additional computer accessories were also found at other locations linked to the ongoing investigation. A total of five suspects are now in custody as the police work to identify and apprehend any other individuals involved in the theft and to recover any remaining stolen items. The identities of the suspects have not been released due to the active nature of the investigation.
This development underscores a rising trend of thefts targeting educational institutions, prompting continued vigilance and investigation by law enforcement agencies.
