The East African Community (EAC) has presented its budget for the 2026/2027 financial year, totaling approximately Shs410 billion ($110 million). The budget, presented by Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, Chairperson of the EAC Council of Ministers, is themed “Deepening Commitment and Realising Objectives and Benefits of Regional Integration” and launches the bloc’s Seventh Development Strategy (2026/27–2030/31).

Despite global economic challenges, the EAC has reported robust economic growth, expanding by 5.8 percent in 2025, which outpaced global growth (3.4 percent). Intra-regional trade saw a significant increase of 28 percent, reaching $19.3 billion, and trade with other nations grew by 25.4 percent. This surge in trade has helped reduce the Community’s trade deficit.

Significant progress was noted in resolving non-tariff barriers, with 35 issues addressed. The introduction of the EAC Customs Bond aims to streamline the movement of goods across member states. In political integration, consultations on a proposed Political Confederation Constitution are advancing, alongside regional peace efforts.

The budget also highlights achievements in tourism, health, and innovation. The “Visit East Africa – Feel the Vibe” brand seeks to market the region as a unified destination. Nine regional health centers of excellence have trained thousands of health professionals and provided specialized treatment to numerous patients.

Infrastructure development remains a priority, with ongoing projects including regional road networks and the Standard Gauge Railway. The East African Crude Oil Pipeline is nearing completion, and financing for hydropower projects is being secured.

The EAC Secretariat will receive the largest allocation, followed by the East African Legislative Assembly and the East African Court of Justice. Key focus areas for the budget include regional trade, industrialization, social integration, the monetary union roadmap, infrastructure, peace and security, and institutional strengthening.
