The ongoing investigation into the tragic death of national rugby player Sydney Gongodyo has led to the further remand of four suspects. Appearing before the City Hall Court on Monday for a case mention, the prosecution stated that police inquiries have not yet concluded.
Prosecutor Grace Akite informed Grade One Magistrate Edgar Karakire that police are actively searching for additional individuals implicated in Gongodyo’s killing. “We have other suspects still on the run and police are searching for them. We pray for an adjournment to enable police to wind up their investigations and also arrest other suspects,” Akite told the court.
As a result, the accused—Obed Mugwisa (39), Elly Mondoni (33), Joseph Owino (30), and Henry Kabugo (21)—will remain in Luzira Prison until July 23, 2026. The court does not have jurisdiction to try the murder charges, which are capital offenses reserved for the High Court.
Gongodyo, a prominent forward for the Rugby Cranes and Stanbic Black Pirates, was allegedly attacked by a mob in Bukoto on June 5, 2026. Reports indicate he was falsely accused of snatching a handbag. Despite being rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
The incident has sent ripples through Uganda’s sporting community and has reignited concerns about mob justice. Police have assured that efforts to apprehend all involved parties continue, and the search for additional suspects remains a priority.
