The Uganda Prisons Service has seen a significant elevation of its senior ranks, with 258 officers promoted by Commissioner General Dr. Johnson Byabashaija. This wave of promotions includes 20 individuals elevated to Assistant Commissioner of Prisons, 27 to Senior Superintendent of Prisons, 34 to Superintendent of Prisons, and 134 to Senior Assistant Superintendent of Prisons.

In addition to the promotions, Dr. Byabashaija also announced the transfer of 14 officers across various prisons. Three other officers have been granted accumulated leave, pending further decision by the Prisons Authority.

Commissioner General Byabashaija emphasized that these promotions were a recognition of the officers’ dedication, discipline, and unwavering commitment to the Prisons Service. He urged the promoted officers to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and to continue striving for excellence.

These promotions are in line with Article 172 (3) and 217 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda and Section 10 (C) of the Prisons Act, 2006. The decision to conduct these promotions was made during the 46th Meeting of the Prisons Authority on April 30, 2026, held at the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The recent promotions follow a larger batch of 4,996 junior officers promoted in April of this year. The Uganda Prisons Service currently comprises approximately 14,300 personnel nationwide.
