A targeted operation in Hoima city has resulted in the critical injury and arrest of Hamis Keya, 42, a resident of Wakiso district, who police have identified as a key figure in a string of violent mobile money robberies.
Keya is suspected of orchestrating numerous heists targeting mobile money agents in districts including Wakiso, Kampala, Luwero, Masindi, and Hoima. Authorities allege that Keya and an unknown number of accomplices have employed firearms and machetes in their operations, often ambushing agents during cash transportation.
The manhunt for Keya began after detectives at Masulita Police Station in Wakiso linked him to the robbery of a mobile money agent. Following his escape from the initial scene, investigators tracked his movements.
On Saturday, Keya was reportedly spotted on the Kampala-Hoima road riding a Bajaj motorcycle, registration number UMA 633GS. Police in Wakiso collaborated with Hoima City police to intercept him near the Hoima School of Nursing and Midwifery.
According to police reports, Keya attempted to evade capture, prompting Flying Squad operatives to fire a shot, hitting him in the right thigh. He was subsequently taken to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for treatment under heavy guard.
Albertine regional police spokesperson Julius Hakiza stated that plans are in motion to transfer Keya to Wakiso for further questioning regarding the alleged offenses. The impounded motorcycle, believed to be stolen, is being held at Hoima City Central Police Station as evidence.
