A swift police response on Tuesday morning thwarted a robbery in Kampala’s Nakawa Division, resulting in the death of one suspect. The incident occurred around midnight in Ssemwogerere Zone when three armed individuals accosted a businessman and his wife walking along Mukasa Road.
According to police reports, the assailants robbed the man of his mobile phone and wallet at gunpoint. As they turned their attention to the woman, police officers on routine motorcycle patrol coincidentally arrived at the scene.
The timely intervention of the officers disrupted the ongoing robbery and prompted the suspects to flee. “Upon noticing the police, the suspects attempted to flee,” stated Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, SP Rachel Kawala. During the ensuing chase, the suspects abandoned a bag containing their loot and a firearm.
One unidentified male suspect, believed to be in his mid-twenties, sustained fatal injuries during the encounter and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have launched a manhunt for the two accomplices who managed to escape.
Authorities recovered several items from the scene, including a SAR rifle, a bayonet, four suspected stolen smartphones, two shaving machines, three jackets, an empty cartridge, a screwdriver, red canvas shoes, and a black laptop bag. The body of the deceased suspect has been transferred to Mulago City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
