South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, has announced a December 22 date for its inaugural general election. This highly anticipated vote has faced numerous postponements since its initial planned date in 2015, largely due to civil war and subsequent political instability.
The 2018 peace accord, which established a transitional unity government led by President Salva Kiir and his deputy Riek Machar, had outlined an election for 2022. However, persistent tensions between the two leaders and ongoing security concerns thwarted these plans.
Despite the new date, the path to the ballot box remains fraught with uncertainty. Abednego Akok Kacuol, the electoral commission chief, acknowledged that significant hurdles persist, including outstanding legal amendments and funding shortfalls that continue to impede preparations. He emphasized that the “political will” required rests with the government.
While the presidency has reiterated President Kiir’s commitment to the peace agreement and democratic elections, concerns are being voiced by opposition groups and civil society organizations. Issues surrounding security, political freedoms, and overall electoral readiness remain critical points of contention.
The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO), led by Riek Machar, has issued a stark warning, describing the prospect of holding elections as “dangerous” given the ongoing conflict in parts of the country. The group cautioned that individuals involved in voter registration or campaigning in territories they control could be taken prisoner, highlighting the volatile security situation.
