Rotary leaders in the Greater Mityana region have initiated a significant campaign to combat the alarming rise in road accidents. The initiative was formally launched during a joint installation ceremony for the new presidents of the Rotary Clubs of Ssingo Mityana, Mityana, and Kabulasoke-Gomba.
District Governor Gerald Obai highlighted road accidents as a critical public safety issue for Uganda, urging collective action. He stressed the need for intensified awareness campaigns and responsible road use to prevent further loss of life.
This focus on road safety was echoed by the newly installed presidents. Rtn. Rev. Joshua Ssali of the Rotary Club of Ssingo Mityana pledged to make road safety a top priority, emphasizing that each crash disrupts lives and communities. He plans to collaborate with government agencies, schools, transport operators, and local leaders to spread awareness.
Rtn. Viola Biryomumaisho of the Rotary Club of Mityana and Rtn. David Mwanje of the Rotary Club of Kabulasoke-Gomba also committed to leading road safety efforts in their respective areas, calling for support from government and development partners.
Francis Natukwasa, Officer in Charge of Traffic in Mityana District, welcomed the Rotary initiative, underscoring the importance of public awareness, strict law enforcement, and disciplined behavior from all road users. He noted that most accidents are preventable if rules are followed.
Uganda faces thousands of road crashes annually, largely due to speeding, reckless driving, drunk driving, and poor road discipline. The Rotary campaign aims to bolster community efforts and support national strategies to reduce road traffic fatalities and injuries.
