Mukono District authorities have taken decisive action, shutting down four private schools in the Nakifuma–Nagalama Town Council area. The closures, which occurred Monday morning, are a direct response to the institutions failing to meet the basic operational standards mandated by the Ministry of Education and Sports.

The affected institutions are Teso Standard Junior School, Creamfield High School (formerly Rains High School), Rockview Nursery and Primary School, and Super Quality School. The enforcement was led by Ms. Irene Cherop, the Town Council’s Inspector of Schools, with support from district officials and local leaders.

According to Ms. Cherop, these schools had been issued multiple warnings and inspection reports detailing necessary improvements. However, the proprietors largely failed to implement the required changes. “None of the schools could meet even 20 percent of the required operational standards,” she stated, highlighting a lack of essential facilities like proper sanitation and the continued operation in dilapidated structures that presented significant safety hazards.

Ms. Cherop expressed concern that some school owners prioritize profit over the quality of the learning environment and the well-being of the students. She noted a tendency for some operators to ignore directives, mistakenly believing they were protected by influential connections, and vowed that enforcement actions would proceed regardless of ownership or affiliations.

She emphasized that quality education encompasses more than just infrastructure; it includes qualified teachers, effective management, adequate learning materials, and a safe, sanitary environment. The closed schools will remain shut until they fully address the identified deficiencies and comply with all regulatory requirements.

Parents have been advised to transfer their children to nearby government or licensed private schools that adhere to the required standards. Other non-compliant schools have been put on notice, with authorities warning of similar action if improvements are not made promptly. This move is part of a wider district-wide effort to enhance accountability and ensure the safety and welfare of learners across all educational institutions.

This enforcement action is part of ongoing efforts by Mukono District to promote quality education and learner welfare. https://www.monitor.ug/uganda/news/national/mukono-authorities-shut-four-private-schools-over-poor-standards-5505856
