Ugandan legislators have been called upon to transcend political party divisions and concentrate on initiatives that foster national cohesion and welfare. Prince Kassim Nakibinge Kakungulu, the Titular Head of Muslims in Uganda, emphasized that sectors like education, health, and financial development offer common ground for progress.

“There is no reason why we should waste our energies on those trivialities, rather let us utilise our energies for the good of our people,” Prince Nakibinge stated during a luncheon with the Muslim Parliamentary Caucus. He encouraged MPs to focus on their capacity to deliver for their constituents, thereby earning public trust.

Former Premier John Patrick Amama Mbabazi echoed the call for unity, stressing that national interests and the well-being of Ugandans must take precedence over partisan politics. He highlighted that Uganda’s transformation hinges on a “unity of purpose,” urging MPs to respect differing viewpoints and seek common ground on critical issues such as development, poverty eradication, and ethical governance.

Mbabazi also advised MPs to strategically manage the nation’s anticipated oil revenues to ensure long-term prosperity. He described Uganda’s oil reserves, estimated to last 25-30 years, as a “springboard, not a destination.” Revenues should be invested in critical sectors like agriculture, science and technology, manufacturing, and education to build a self-sustaining economy.

He urged legislators to view themselves as custodians of an exhaustible national asset, ensuring its benefits extend to future generations. The Chairperson of the Muslim Parliamentary Caucus, Hon. Hassan Kirumira, pledged the caucus’s commitment to advancing the welfare of the Muslim community within Uganda.
