A prominent Kenyan lawyer and former Justice Minister, Martha Karua, has detailed a troubling incident at Entebbe International Airport. Karua states she was initially cleared by immigration upon arrival but was later informed that a mistake had been made and a note existed against her name.
Karua, who was in Uganda to represent Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago in court alongside lawyers for opposition figure Kizza Besigye, described a series of confusing interactions with officials. She was reportedly moved between several officers before being taken to the principal immigration officer, who ultimately ordered her entry denied.
During the ordeal, Karua’s mobile phones were confiscated without clear explanation. She expressed concern about potential data extraction from her devices, reporting that one phone was “snatched” and another taken when she attempted to contact colleagues.
Karua questioned the legality of her detention and deportation, highlighting that she held a valid East African passport and had not been informed of any specific law she had violated. The principal immigration officer cited “security” as the sole reason for denying her entry, reportedly stating she was a “security threat to Uganda.”
The incident has drawn condemnation from legal bodies in both Kenya and Uganda, raising concerns about the principles of free movement within the East African Community and the ability of legal professionals to conduct their duties across borders. The Uganda Law Society noted Karua held a valid special practicing certificate, adding another layer of concern to her treatment.
