Hundreds of supporters of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago were left in a state of anxiety and frustration yesterday after the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court unexpectedly delayed its bail ruling. This decision means Lukwago remains in Luzira Prison, intensifying worries about his deteriorating health.

The courtroom was packed with supporters clad in People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) colours, while many others crowded outside, eager to hear the fate of the 56-year-old politician, who faces a charge of misprision of treason.

Lukwago, who had spent a week in detention, had hoped for his release when Chief Magistrate Sarah Basemera was scheduled to deliver her ruling. However, shortly before the appointed time, lawyers from both sides were called into the magistrate’s chambers instead of the open court, sparking immediate concern among the waiting crowd.

Lead defence lawyer Medard Lubega Ssegona later informed the disheartened supporters that the magistrate’s ruling was not ready. Ssegona explained that due to the highly charged atmosphere, the magistrate decided against announcing the delay in open court, opting instead to deliver the ruling electronically via the Electronic Court Case Management Information System (ECCMIS) within 24 hours.

Beyond the procedural delay, Lukwago’s health status was a dominant topic of discussion. His lawyer informed the court that Lukwago suffers from a serious spinal condition requiring specialized treatment not available in prison. Concerns were also raised about his vulnerability to infections, particularly due to his proximity to inmates with tuberculosis.

The defence cited previous cases where individuals with serious health concerns allegedly died in detention, urging the court to consider Lukwago’s condition. The prosecution, however, has strongly opposed bail, citing the gravity of the treason-related charge and national security interests.

The proceedings also occurred amidst controversy over the deportation of Kenyan lawyer Martha Karua, who was reportedly denied entry into Uganda despite being a lead defense lawyer in another ongoing case involving Dr. Kizza Besigye.

As dusk approached, Lukwago’s supporters dispersed, still awaiting the electronic ruling that might secure his temporary freedom, while the opposition figure remains in custody, with his legal team emphasizing the growing risks to his fragile health.
