The recent deportation of prominent Kenyan lawyer and politician Martha Karua from Uganda has ignited significant criticism from opposition figures. Leaders from various political parties, including the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), and People’s Progressive Party (PPP), collectively denounced the action, labeling it politically motivated.

Ms. Karua, who was reportedly en route to Uganda to assist in the legal defense of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Obeid Lutale, was denied entry at Entebbe International Airport. Opposition leaders stated that instead of being allowed to perform her professional duties, she was declared persona non grata and expelled from the country.

This incident has raised serious questions about Uganda’s commitment to the principles of East African Community (EAC) integration. Critics highlighted the apparent contradiction between promoting the free movement of people and professionals within the EAC and denying entry to a lawyer. They questioned the message this sends to Ugandan legal practitioners working in other member states.

Furthermore, the deportation is seen as a potential infringement on the constitutional right of accused individuals to choose their legal representation. Opposition figures emphasized that blocking a lawyer’s access to a client raises grave concerns about the fairness of the legal process and the broader issue of access to justice.

The deportation occurs amidst heightened political tensions surrounding Dr. Besigye’s ongoing legal battles. Some officials have suggested that Karua’s removal is part of a broader effort to obstruct members of Besigye’s legal team. Concerns were also voiced about the increasing pressure on democratic institutions within Uganda, with warnings about the concentration of power and the erosion of the rule of law.

In response, opposition leaders are demanding a clear explanation from the government regarding the legal basis for Karua’s denied entry and are calling for an end to political interference in judicial processes. They expressed disappointment, stating this action is contrary to the aspirations for a more integrated and just East Africa.

Karua is a respected figure in Kenyan law and politics, having previously served as Minister for Justice and ran for president. Her involvement in Dr. Besigye’s defense has drawn regional and international attention to Uganda’s political landscape.

This incident has initiated a debate on the balance between national security concerns, the fundamental right to legal representation, and the commitments undertaken within the East African Community framework. The source article is from the Daily Monitor (Uganda).
