Kagadi General Hospital, established in 1968, is grappling with immense challenges that are severely impacting healthcare delivery. The hospital serves an estimated population of over 470,000 people, acting as a crucial referral point for 35 local government units, many of which lack basic health facilities.

Recent assessments reveal that the hospital operates at only 43 percent of its required staffing capacity. This shortage, coupled with dilapidated infrastructure including leaking roofs, worn-out paint, and aging buildings, exacerbates the problems. Many staff quarters are also in a state of disrepair, contributing to the loss of specialized medical personnel.

The hospital’s annual budget of Shs1.15 billion is insufficient to meet the growing demands, with a significant portion allocated to medicines. Limited funds are stretched thin to cover essential operations, maintenance, and ambulance services, leaving little for direct patient care.

Overcrowding is a major concern, with wards often exceeding their intended capacity by almost double. Expectant mothers have been reportedly forced to sleep on the floor in the maternity ward due to a lack of beds, and postnatal care is compromised by limited space. These conditions force many residents to seek care at private facilities, incurring higher costs.

Allegations of extortion by some health workers demanding unofficial payments from patients, particularly expectant mothers, are also being investigated. Hospital administration has warned staff against such practices and stated that services are free, vowing to prosecute offenders.

Local leaders and Members of Parliament are urging the government to provide urgent financial support and a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for Kagadi Hospital. They highlight its strategic importance, especially given its proximity to the DR Congo border, and call for upgrades to its infrastructure and equipment, similar to support provided to other districts.
