Former Kampala Lord Mayor and People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) president Erias Lukwago has been denied bail by Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court. Chief Magistrate Sarah Basemera ruled on Tuesday that Lukwago’s significant public influence, coupled with the serious nature of the charges against him – misprision of treason – posed a risk of interference with ongoing investigations.
Magistrate Basemera noted that Lukwago’s position as a senior advocate, former Lord Mayor, and political party president grants him an extensive network. She stated that while such distinctions should not be penalized, they are relevant factors in assessing the potential impact of his release during the investigation phase. The court emphasized that the investigation is still active and the offense carries a potential life sentence.
Despite the bail denial, the court issued specific directives concerning Lukwago’s health. Within 24 hours, the Officer in Charge of Murchison Bay Prison and the Commissioner General of Prisons are to arrange for Lukwago to be transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for a comprehensive medical evaluation and treatment. His wife and a chosen advocate will be granted reasonable access during this period, subject to prison regulations.
Lukwago, who is 56 years old, had applied for bail on medical grounds, citing conditions such as hypertension, gastritis, respiratory issues, and a spinal ailment. He also claimed to be of advanced age. His application was supported by several Members of Parliament as sureties, whom the court found substantial but ultimately insufficient to grant bail.
Lukwago is accused of knowing about an alleged plot to overthrow the government by Dr. Kizza Besigye and others, and failing to report it to authorities. He was arrested on June 15, 2026, and denies the allegations. His remand continues, with his next court appearance scheduled for June 30, 2026, the same date as proceedings in the High Court treason case in which he was expected to act as part of the defense.
