Buganda’s Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, has issued a powerful plea for politicians to prioritize forgiveness and reconciliation as essential steps towards healing the nation from political rifts. The message was conveyed by Israel Kazibwe Kitooke, the Minister of Information, Mobilization, and Kingdom Spokesperson, during a ceremony at the Buganda Kingdom headquarters in Bulange, Mengo.
The Katikkiro highlighted that this call for unity is particularly relevant following elections, which often lead to divisions among the people, especially within Buganda.
He referenced a recent Eid message from Kabaka Mutebi, who stressed the importance of forgiveness in developed nations and condemned corruption and greed among contemporary politicians. The Kabaka urged leaders to draw inspiration from such countries in their conduct of public affairs.
During the event, Kazibwe also updated attendees on the Kingdom’s development agenda, noting a strong focus on coffee farming. He encouraged farmers to enhance coffee quality by adhering to proper cultivation and processing guidelines, emphasizing that value-added coffee can significantly boost farmers’ incomes and, consequently, improve living standards through better healthcare, education, and housing.
Furthermore, Kazibwe reminded the public about the upcoming 33rd coronation anniversary celebrations of the Kabaka, scheduled to be held at Watoto Church, and urged full participation to honor the occasion.
Leaders from Butambala county, including Chief Katambala Hajj Sulaiman Magala and MP Eriasa Mukiibi Sserunjogi, expressed their support for the Kingdom’s initiatives, including the “Mwanyi Terimba” (Coffee Value Chain Development) and praised the inclusion of youth in the oluwalo (contribution) program. Sserunjogi specifically appealed to the Kingdom to facilitate dialogue among politicians to address national challenges.
The oluwalo collection, presented at Mengo, comprised contributions from the counties of Butambala, Kyaggwe, and Buddu, totaling approximately Shs 29.87 million. These funds are vital for supporting the Kingdom’s development projects and programs.
