The first round of high-stakes negotiations between United States and Iranian officials in Switzerland has wrapped up, according to mediators from Qatar and Pakistan. The talks, held at a Swiss mountain resort, aimed to extend a fragile ceasefire and address critical international security issues.

Mediating nations Qatar and Pakistan announced that both the US and Iran have agreed to a roadmap that could lead to a final deal within the next two months. Technical discussions are slated to continue throughout the week. The joint statement indicated that agreements were reached on a mechanism to de-escalate the conflict in Lebanon and establish a communication channel to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the vital Strait of Hormuz.

Discussions involved topics such as the Strait of Hormuz, the situation in Lebanon, and nuclear issues. The agreement reportedly includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial chokepoint for global energy shipments, and an end to all hostilities. Despite an announcement of a new ceasefire in Lebanon, fighting had persisted.

US Vice President JD Vance led the American delegation, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi represented Iran. The talks occurred under a memorandum of understanding reached the previous week, intended to extend a fragile ceasefire. Iran’s Foreign Minister reported securing waivers for oil and petrochemical exports and the release of some frozen assets.

However, the negotiations were marked by significant friction. US President Donald Trump reiterated threats to attack Iran if the Strait of Hormuz was closed again, while Iran cited ongoing Israeli strikes in Lebanon as a reason for initially halting maritime traffic through the strait. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that the Iranian delegation temporarily withdrew from direct talks following President Trump’s public threats, though communication continued through mediators. A US diplomat involved in the talks, however, stated that negotiations were ongoing late into the night, covering various critical issues.
