Uganda Needs Social Media Dialogue Amidst Growing Misuse and Defamation Cases
Social media platforms are increasingly relied upon for information, yet the ease with which misinformation spreads and the rise in online defamation necessitate a critical conversation about responsible usage and potential limitations in Uganda. Social media has become a primary source of information for many, often trusted without sufficient verification. The rapid spread of falsehoods online makes it challenging to correct misinformation once it takes root, as truth often struggles to catch up.
Beyond the spread of fake news, platforms are frequently used for casual humour that is quickly shared, contributing to a culture of misuse. This has led some nations, such as Australia, Indonesia, and the United Kingdom, to consider or implement bans on social media access for children under 16, affecting platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram.
While these measures target minors, adults are also abusing social media to disseminate harmful content. A recent Uganda High Court ruling highlighted this issue when a Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) staff member was ordered to pay Shs100 million in damages for defaming a colleague through messages on a URA senior management WhatsApp group.
The court found the staff member guilty of circulating unverified allegations related to a shooting incident and a personal dispute. This case underscores the urgent need to address cyberbullying and establish online behavioural standards comparable to those in face-to-face interactions.
Uganda must engage in a localized discussion about the misuse of social media, considering both the spread of harmful information and the need for accountability. Users also bear responsibility for managing their screen time, recognizing addictive patterns, and establishing tech-free periods to foster a healthier digital environment.
