The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has officially commenced a year of events to commemorate its 70th anniversary, marking seven decades of advocacy for the rule of law in Uganda. The celebrations, which will extend through December 2026, aim to reflect on the society’s contributions to legal practice and constitutional governance.

The launch event saw legal professionals and regional bar leaders gather, using the platform to both commend the ULS’s historical role and voice anxieties over current trends impacting judicial independence and legal practice.

Charles Kajama, President of the Law Society of Kenya, lauded the ULS for its regional influence and unwavering stance against lawlessness. He emphasized the core duty of every lawyer to uphold justice impartially, citing an oath they all take. Kajama also raised specific concerns, including the arrest of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, reportedly due to client communication, and the deportation of Kenyan Senior Counsel Martha Karua despite her valid license to practice in Uganda.

Anthony Asiimwe, Vice President of the ULS, stated that the anniversary goes beyond festivities, serving as a reaffirmation of the society’s dedication to justice. He announced a nationwide protest by lawyers scheduled for June 26, 2026, as a demonstration of discontent with the current state of the rule of law.

Soroti City Woman MP Ann Adeke Ebaju praised the ULS for fostering women’s participation in law and expressed solidarity with those facing rights violations. The ULS, founded in 1956, plans a series of activities throughout the year to highlight its legacy and ongoing mission.
