President Yoweri Museveni is set to make a significant appearance in Kalangala District today, spearheading the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) concluding efforts to garner support for their candidate in the Woman Member of Parliament by-election. The President’s presence at a rally in Kibanga Playground is intended to bolster the party’s chances against strong opposition contenders.
The by-election, scheduled for Wednesday, June 24, was triggered by the unfortunate passing of the district’s former MP, Hellen Nakimuli of the National Unity Platform (NUP), in April. The race sees five candidates competing for the seat, including Nakimuli’s sister, Irene Nampala, who is running for NUP, alongside three independent candidates.
Senior NRM officials have converged on Kalangala to orchestrate the final grassroots campaign. NRM Deputy Secretary General Rose Namayanja-Nsereko expressed strong confidence in the party’s prospects, stating they anticipate securing over 70 percent of the vote due to a positive reception on the ground. She highlighted the success of the NRM’s village-based mobilization strategy.
Meanwhile, NRM candidate Idah Nabayiga has been detailing her policy agenda during her final campaign days. She has pledged to focus on improving healthcare, ensuring access to clean water, upgrading road infrastructure, and enhancing ferry services for the Kyamuswa area. Nabayiga also aims to support local fishing communities and ensure that government poverty alleviation funds effectively benefit laborers involved in the oil palm sector.
Despite the high stakes, the electoral campaign has been notably peaceful, with no significant clashes reported. Political analysts suggest that President Museveni’s final campaign address could be a crucial factor in Wednesday’s election outcome, especially as the NRM seeks to reinforce its standing in the district.
