MPs Urged to Prioritize National Cohesion Over Party Politics for Uganda's Welfare

Members of Parliament are being encouraged to move beyond party affiliations and concentrate on issues that foster national unity and improve the welfare of Ugandans. This call to action was emphasized by Prince Kassim Nakibinge Kakungulu, the Titular Head of Muslims in Uganda, during a recent luncheon hosted for the Muslim Parliamentary Caucus.

Prince Nakibinge highlighted that Uganda possesses numerous unifying sectors, including education, health, and financial development. He urged legislators not to be consumed by party rivalries but instead to channel their energies towards the betterment of the nation, stating that good performance reflects positively on the individual MP and earns public trust.

Former Premier John Patrick Amama Mbabazi echoed Prince Nakibinge’s sentiments, stressing that the nation’s interests and the well-being of its citizens must supersede partisan politics. He called for a united front in addressing critical areas such as development, poverty eradication, education, youth empowerment, and ethical governance, noting that political competition should not hinder collaboration on issues vital to the country’s future.

Mbabazi also urged MPs to play a crucial role in managing Uganda’s transition into a petrostate. He advised that the revenue generated from oil should serve as a foundation for long-term, generational wealth rather than facilitating short-term consumption. With Uganda’s oil reserves estimated to last only 25 to 30 years, Mbabazi described the resource as a “springboard, not a destination.”

He proposed strategic investments in sectors such as agriculture, agro-processing, science and technology, energy, manufacturing, transport, infrastructure, and education. These investments, he argued, are essential for building a self-sustaining economy that can thrive long after the oil runs out, ensuring that the benefits of this exhaustible national asset extend to future generations.

Hon. Hassan Kirumira, Chairperson of the Muslim Parliamentary Caucus, pledged the caucus’s commitment to advancing the welfare of the Muslim community in Uganda. The Luncheon was held at Prince Nakibinge’s residence in Kibuli on Friday, June 19, 2026.
