Lionel Messi became the all-time leading scorer in men’s World Cup history on Monday, scoring twice to lead Argentina to a 2-0 win against Austria and secure their passage to the knockout rounds.
The milestone goal arrived in the 38th minute. After initiating a swift attacking move, Messi timed his run perfectly to meet Facundo Medina’s cross, finishing with his first touch into the bottom corner. This strike marked his 17th career World Cup goal, surpassing the previous record held by Germany’s Miroslav Klose.
Despite the historic achievement, Messi’s night began with a missed penalty in the opening 10 minutes after Lautaro Martinez had earned the spot-kick. He was subsequently denied by Austria’s resilient defense, marshalled by David Alaba, on a couple of occasions.
However, Messi wasn’t finished. In stoppage time, he reacted swiftly to a scramble in the box, forcing the ball home for his second of the match. This 18th World Cup goal not only extended his individual record but also saw him overtake Brazilian legend Marta as the highest scorer across both men’s and women’s World Cup tournaments. This brace also extended his remarkable scoring streak to six consecutive World Cup appearances.
This victory ensures Argentina’s progression in the tournament, with Messi continuing to set new benchmarks on the global stage.
