Makindye Chief Magistrates Court has extended the remand of prominent opposition figure Erias Lukwago, postponing the decision on his bail application. The presiding magistrate, Sarah Basemera, cited a chaotic courtroom environment and complex procedural matters as reasons for the delay.

In a significant shift, the court announced that the bail ruling will be communicated electronically through the Electronic Court Case Management Information System (ECMIS) within the next 24 hours. Lukwago is scheduled to return to court physically on June 30, 2026, for the mention of his case. This date notably coincides with the court appearance of Dr. Kizza Besigye, a key figure Lukwago represents, raising expectations of heightened political and security interest.

Lukwago’s defense team, led by Medard Lubega Sseggona, expressed frustration over the delay but urged supporters to remain calm. Sseggona also raised serious concerns about Lukwago’s deteriorating health in custody, drawing parallels to previous cases where the health of remanded individuals was disregarded. “Her Worship the Chief Magistrate advised that her ruling is not ready. Owing to the sensitivity of the case and the environment, she undertook to deliver the ruling by email via ECMIS within 24 hours,” Sseggona stated.

The legal proceedings also took a diplomatic turn with the revelation that Kenyan politician Martha Karua, who had traveled to support Lukwago’s defense, was reportedly detained at the airport and deported. Sseggona condemned this action as an affront to regional integration and an accused person’s right to choose their legal representation.

Both Lukwago and Dr. Besigye are facing charges that many in the opposition community view as politically motivated efforts to stifle dissent. The focus now shifts to the ECMIS platform for the awaited bail verdict.
