Makindye Chief Magistrate Sarah Basemera is scheduled to deliver a private ruling on the bail application of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago this afternoon. Lukwago, who faces a charge of misprision of treason, was arrested on June 15, 2026, and remanded to Murchison Bay Prison.

Lukwago’s defence team, led by Medard Ssegona, urged the court to grant bail citing his deteriorating health. They detailed a severe spinal disc condition causing excruciating pain and highlighted concerns about potential Tuberculosis exposure within the prison environment, arguing that his fragile health could not withstand such risks.

The lawyers proposed either bail or immediate transfer to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialized treatment. However, the prosecution vehemently opposed the application, asserting that the gravity of the treason charge makes Lukwago a potential flight risk, especially given the possibility of a life sentence.

State attorneys argued that Lukwago’s prominence could allow him to interfere with investigations and witnesses. They also countered claims that his medical condition could not be managed in detention, stating the Uganda Prisons Service is equipped to provide necessary care. The prosecution further questioned the adequacy of the sureties presented by the defence and dismissed the age argument, as Lukwago is 56, below the 60-year threshold for advanced age under bail guidelines.

The court’s decision, which will be delivered from the magistrate’s chambers, will determine whether Lukwago remains in custody or is granted bail pending trial, a matter attracting significant public and legal attention.
