Kalangala Candidates Urged to Prioritize Safety Amidst Rough Lake Victoria Waters

As the campaign period for the Kalangala Woman MP by-election draws to a close, candidates and their supporters are being strongly advised to prioritize safety when navigating the waters of Lake Victoria. Assistant Resident District Commissioner Kajubi Twahika emphasized the need for vigilance, particularly between March and August, when seasonal winds typically create turbulent conditions.
Mr. Twahika urged political actors to adhere to safety measures, including mandatory use of life jackets and avoiding risky boat processions. He cautioned that the current weather patterns have escalated the dangers of water transportation between the district’s numerous islands. “Let them always wear life jackets and avoid sailing whenever the waves become too strong,” he stated, also advising against large boat processions that could easily lead to capsizing and potential fatalities.
The warning comes as Kalangala prepares for a by-election following the passing of the former Woman MP. The electoral commission allocated a 10-day campaign window, concluding on June 22, for the five candidates vying for the seat to reach voters across the 64 inhabited islands.
Local leaders, such as Bujumba County MP Willy Lugoloobi, noted that the strong seasonal winds, known locally as “Kisaawa,” can make navigation treacherous. He advised those unfamiliar with the waters to minimize travel, highlighting that even seemingly sturdy boats can harbor hidden rot. Lugoloobi’s own campaign team has adopted a decentralized approach and delays travel when conditions are unfavorable.
Meteorological department official Yusuf Nsubuga explained that the strong winds are influenced by weather systems moving westward from the Indian Ocean, impacting large water bodies like Lake Victoria. This vulnerability is amplified in Kalangala due to its location at the convergence of multiple wind patterns. Despite these challenges, campaign activities have continued, with some teams employing strategies like night travel when the lake is generally calmer.
Amidst the safety concerns, political tensions have also surfaced, with opposition parties alleging bribery, intimidation, and plans to manipulate election results. Ruling party officials have dismissed these claims as fear of defeat. Security has been intensified as the election approaches, with authorities vowing to maintain public order and prevent any actions that could compromise security.
