Belgium’s star winger, Jeremy Doku, has made a swift return to his national team following a brief but significant absence. Doku flew from the World Cup in Qatar to London to be with his wife for the birth of their first child. The couple welcomed a baby boy, named Praise, on Monday.
The Belgian football federation confirmed that Doku received news of the imminent birth before their recent World Cup match. Team doctor Brahim Hacene stated that Doku was able to travel “without medical risk” to be with his family during this “very special moment.” He was accompanied by a colleague, and both the mother and baby are reported to be doing well.
Doku missed Belgium’s 1-1 draw against Iran, a game he was ruled out of by coach Rudi Garcia. Garcia had explained at the time that Doku was recovering from illness and that player welfare was paramount, stating, “I don’t want to get players to play if they’re not medically up for the game.”
Despite the temporary departure, Doku is expected to rejoin the squad in Seattle on Tuesday evening. England striker Ollie Watkins voiced his support for Doku’s decision, highlighting that family matters should always take priority over football commitments. Belgium, who have drawn their first two group games, are preparing for their final Group G fixture against New Zealand.
