From the humble beginnings of Agago District’s dusty pitches, Godfrey Okello Steward is quietly forging a path in Ugandan football. Now a key figure for the Lugazi Junior Team in the Fufa Juniors League, Okello is developing a reputation as a steadfast defender, characterized by his astute positioning, calm demeanor, and consistent execution of defensive duties.
His journey began in Lira Kato village, where football was a recreational pastime. The potential recognized by Coach Francis Omara led him to Paorinher Sports Academy, a turning point where the unstructured play of his youth gave way to disciplined training and a serious approach to the sport.
Okello’s development continued through school football at Quality High School Buikwe before making the significant leap to Lugazi Junior Team. While the team has faced defensive challenges this season, Okello has emerged as a stable presence, noted for his aerial strength and ability to remain composed under pressure. His coach, Ashraf Munyaga, highlights his coachability and steady improvement in decision-making.
Recognizing that his current strengths are just the foundation, Okello is actively working on his leadership, communication, and the speed of transitions after winning possession. He draws inspiration from Lugazi’s Richard Ayiko and Real Madrid’s Raúl Asencio, admiring defenders who prioritize game intelligence over brute force.
Despite the disparities in early playing conditions compared to his current setup, Okello remains focused and proud of his progress, driven by the desire to excel at the next level. He is a testament to disciplined development and a promising talent for the future of Ugandan football.
