Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago remains in remand after the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court deferred the decision on his bail application. The ruling, initially expected, was postponed with the magistrate citing the sensitivity of the case and security considerations, opting to deliver the verdict electronically within 24 hours.
Lukwago’s legal team, led by Medard Lubega Sseggona, expressed disappointment but understood the magistrate’s decision not to reconvene court amidst public and supporter presence given the ruling was not ready.
“She did not want to gather the crowds that we have, especially when the ruling is not ready,” Sseggona explained.
The substantive treason case is scheduled for mention on June 30, 2026, irrespective of the bail outcome. The defense has strongly advocated for Lukwago’s release, highlighting his worsening health condition. Sseggona informed the court that Lukwago’s immunity is compromised, with medical tests revealing a decreased white blood cell count, making him susceptible to infections.
Concerns were also raised about Lukwago being housed near a tuberculosis ward in Luzira Prison, and the exacerbation of his spinal condition, which requires specialized treatment unavailable in prison. The defense cited past instances where defendants’ health deteriorated significantly while in custody, leading to tragic outcomes.
Lukwago was arrested on June 15, 2026, and charged with misprision of treason for allegedly failing to report knowledge of a plot to overthrow the government. The prosecution opposes bail, arguing he could interfere with investigations or abscond due to the potential life sentence.
Sseggona also commented on the reported detention and deportation of Kenyan lawyer Martha Karua from Uganda, deeming it contrary to the spirit of the East African Community and a concern for professional legal representation rights.
