Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago remains in Luzira Prison after the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court postponed its ruling on his bail application. The court announced that the decision would be communicated via email within the next 24 hours.
The highly anticipated ruling, initially slated for Monday afternoon, was delayed as Chief Magistrate Sarah Basemera stated the decision was not yet ready. This postponement means Lukwago will continue to be held on remand.
Proceedings took a dramatic turn when court officers briefly conferred with Lukwago’s defense lawyers. Subsequently, both the defense and prosecution teams entered the Chief Magistrate’s chambers. Shortly after, Lukwago was escorted from the chambers and returned to Luzira Prison.
Lukwago’s lawyer, Medard Ssegona, informed journalists that the ruling’s delay was communicated in chambers, with the matter scheduled for mention again on June 30, 2026.
Lukwago faces charges of misprision of treason, accused of failing to report information about an alleged plot to overthrow the government. He has denied the charges.
During the bail hearing, the defense emphasized Lukwago’s deteriorating health, citing a severe spinal disc condition exacerbated by detention. They argued that his condition requires specialized medical intervention not available in prison and raised concerns about potential tuberculosis exposure.
The prosecution, however, opposed bail, citing the gravity of the offense and the potential for Lukwago, a prominent figure, to interfere with investigations or flee. They contended that his medical needs could be managed within the prison system.
The case has attracted significant attention due to Lukwago’s public profile as a former mayor, senior counsel, and political activist. The impending bail ruling will determine the next steps in his legal proceedings.
