China and Myanmar Deepen Ties with 'Pauk-Phaw' Friendship

Presidents Xi Jinping of China and Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar held significant talks in Beijing, reaffirming the deep and enduring “Pauk-Phaw” friendship between their nations. This high-level meeting, taking place during Myanmar’s state visit, focused on enhancing bilateral relations, including plans for a China-Myanmar community with a shared future and cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
The leaders discussed a wide range of issues, reaching a broad consensus that sets a course for enhanced strategic cooperation. They emphasized the historical significance of their “Pauk-Phaw” friendship, a term symbolizing the fraternal ties between the two peoples, and marked the 76th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
President Xi highlighted China’s commitment to amity and mutual benefit in its neighborhood diplomacy, assuring Myanmar of support for its sovereignty and development path, while stressing non-interference in internal affairs. He called for continued strategic coordination to navigate a complex international landscape.
A key focus was the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, a flagship Belt and Road project. Both sides agreed to advance cooperation in transportation, energy, agriculture, and connectivity, alongside people-centered aid projects in disaster recovery, rural revitalization, healthcare, and education.
Discussions also covered trade expansion, facilitating border commerce, and deepening collaboration in supply chains. Cultural exchanges, tourism, and people-to-people interactions were planned to strengthen the social foundation of their friendship.
Furthermore, the two nations agreed to enhance security cooperation, focusing on border management and combating cross-border crimes such as telecommunications fraud and drug trafficking. China reiterated its support for national reconciliation and stability in Myanmar.
Both presidents affirmed their commitment to multilateralism and regional stability, aligning on initiatives like the Global Development and Security Initiatives. Myanmar expressed strong support for the one-China principle and China’s core interests.
Following the talks, several cooperation agreements were signed, covering trade, agriculture, culture, and infrastructure, aiming to translate strategic consensus into tangible benefits for both countries and their people.
This visit underscores Myanmar’s commitment to strengthening ties with China, with both nations poised to build on their historical friendship for mutual development and regional prosperity.
