The West Nile sub-region of Uganda, strategically positioned near South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, has long been recognized for its economic potential that remains largely untapped. A critical barrier has been the inadequate air transport infrastructure, which has hindered investment, tourism, and international trade.
This situation is set to change with ambitious plans to upgrade Arua Aerodrome into a full-fledged international airport. Local leaders and aviation authorities see this as a pivotal step towards transforming Arua into a key regional aviation hub, capable of handling larger passenger and cargo aircraft.
The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has committed €155.99 million (approximately Shs650 billion) for Phase 1 of the Uganda Airports Development Programme. This funding will facilitate the construction of a 3.5-kilometer paved runway, new taxiways and aprons, a passenger terminal designed for 700,000 travelers annually, and a cargo terminal capable of handling 25,000 tonnes per year. A new control tower, access roads, and modern safety systems are also included.
This development is expected to dramatically reduce transportation costs and travel times for traders and investors, enabling direct access to international markets from West Nile rather than routing through Entebbe. The region’s agricultural products, such as coffee and honey, as well as fishing products, are poised for easier export. Furthermore, the upgrade is anticipated to significantly boost tourism by making attractions like Ajai Game Reserve and the region’s natural beauty more accessible compared to the lengthy road journeys currently required.
“This project is about more than an airport. It is about connecting people to opportunity, opening new markets for businesses, supporting tourism, and strengthening Uganda’s role as a regional trade and logistics hub,” stated Mike Salawou, AfDB’s Director for the Infrastructure and Urban Development Department. The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority has also lauded the project, noting Arua Airport’s current status as the second busiest in Uganda and its potential to serve as an alternative to Entebbe International Airport during emergencies.
Local businessmen and community leaders have expressed great optimism, viewing the airport’s expansion as a catalyst for economic growth, increased business, and a new era for the West Nile region. The transformation is anticipated to encourage the development of ancillary services like hotels, logistics centers, and commercial districts, solidifying Arua’s role as a vital economic engine for Central Africa.
