Kikade Trading Centre in Kassanda District has been ravaged by a second major fire in under a month, leaving more than 200 people without homes and causing extensive property damage. The blaze, which erupted on Saturday afternoon in Lwensambya Village, is believed to have originated from an unauthorized electricity connection.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing sparks from an electricity pole before the inferno rapidly spread, consuming numerous residential and commercial structures. Shops, clinics, bars, and homes were reduced to ashes. The fire reportedly started from a similar point where a previous inferno occurred just weeks ago, devastating families who were just beginning to rebuild.

The incident has amplified concerns about the safety of power installations and the dangerous practice of illegal power tapping in the rapidly growing trading centre. Preliminary police investigations point to an individual identified as Kiiza, who is now on the run, as the prime suspect for allegedly attempting an illegal connection.

Local leaders estimate the losses to be in the millions, with many victims losing all their possessions. Police have cordoned off the scene and are conducting investigations, including statements from witnesses and local leaders. A General Enquiry File has been opened as detectives work with electrical experts to confirm the cause.

Regional police spokesperson, Mr. Lameck Kigozi, urged the public to avoid illegal connections and unlicensed electricians, emphasizing the severe risks involved. Security has been increased in the area to prevent looting as residents sift through the debris.
