Stanbic Black Pirates have advanced to the 2026 Uganda Rugby Premiership final after a nail-biting semifinal clash against Heathens. Despite holding a comfortable 15-3 lead from the first leg and an unbeaten record at home for two seasons, Pirates faced a fierce comeback attempt from the record 17-time champions.
Heathens showed immense determination, overwhelming Pirates’ defense at times. Early exchanges saw Heathens take the lead through penalties from Mathew Musasizi, while Roy Kizito responded with a try for Pirates. A drop goal from Joseph Oyet and further penalties extended Heathens’ lead to 12-5 by halftime.
Following the break, Pirates found their rhythm. Timothy Kisiga kicked two crucial penalties and converted a try by Haruna Muhammad. Alex Aturinda then exploited space, leading to a spectacular try from Muhammad who weaved through multiple defenders. Heathens fought back with a converted try from Patrick Okello and a last-gasp effort from Jude Jjuuko, making the score 27-21 on the night. However, Pirates’ defense held firm under intense pressure in the dying moments, securing their aggregate victory.
The Pirates squad played with renewed purpose, dedicating their victory to their late teammate, Sydney Gongodyo, who passed away tragically a fortnight prior. The semifinal win sets up a final against Buffaloes at King’s Park Arena.
