In Uganda, a notable shift is occurring within the religious landscape as many pastors are transitioning from solely spiritual leaders to self-proclaimed business mentors. This evolution sees them offering advice on national economics and business ventures, promising prosperity to their congregations.

Traditionally, religious leaders collected offerings and donations, often presenting these as acts of charity towards the needy. However, the approach is changing. Instead of direct spiritual intervention for financial problems, pastors encourage followers to seek practical business lessons within the church. This includes special services where congregants bring business tools or merchandise for a “blessing,” accompanied by cash offerings and a ‘seed’ investment, often exceeding the standard tithe.

The narrative suggests that while followers are encouraged to focus on their work and business, the pastors themselves are investing the collected funds into ventures significantly larger than those of their congregants, even using congregational money to maintain luxurious lifestyles. The article posits that these pastors might even leverage their influence to secure public funds for personal ventures, all while reminding congregants that God is observing from a state of rest.

When business ventures don’t yield the promised results, the advice is to question one’s own business acumen rather than divine intervention. The writer, Mr. Alan Tacca, is a novelist and socio-political commentator. Source: Daily Monitor (Uganda)
